Pastor Geoff provides an explanation of how the New Testament uses the Old Testament. In particular, Pastor Geoff shows how Paul uses Psalm 68 in Ephesians 4. What has baffled many in wondering 'how' Paul used the psalm to further his argument in Ephesians 4, Pastor Geoff endeavors to explain.
Paul used Psalm 68 in context and, in fact, the way in which Paul uses the psalm to enhance his argument in Ephesians 4 could not have been more appropriate and compelling.
This sermon was preached at a Senior Living home in St Louis, Missouri to a group of older folks who gather for the weekly Bible study. We are working through the book of Hebrews to show that "Jesus is better" -- and our study is one chapter per study to give the big picture of Christ's unrivaled & beautiful supremacy!
"Persevere in Prayer Under Pressure: Cast Your Burdens on the LORD!"
Pastor Geoff preaches Ps 55 and shows how to cope with the most severe heartache in life — enemies rising up against you and the betrayal of an intimate, close friend. What do you do? How do you cope? How does anxiety turn to assurance? How does worry become worship?
Psalm 55 provides the answer (along with 1 Peter 5:6-7).
Pastor Geoff leads the congregation through the events that transpire in the middle of the night as Jesus is tried before Caiaphas and Peter is, at the same time, outside in the courtyard -- where he will deny his Savior on three different occasions.
The events will be laid out under three headings as we go back to this scene and observe the denials of Peter and as we learn from this episode so we can walk closely with Christ, by God's grace, and for His glory.
"Peter's Denials: The Dangers of Self-Confidence & the Greatness of Christ's Grace"
In this sermon, Pastor Geoff draws out 4 pastoral, serious exhortations for us:
1. See the danger of self confidence.
2. See the shame of public denials
3. See the timing of divine providence
4. See the grace of true repentance
Pastor Geoff provides biblical counseling to those who find themselves battling postpartum depression.
5 encouragements to mothers:
you can feel disconnected, hard to concentrate, tired/weary/weak, sad, not bonding with baby, feel overwhelmed.
1. CHILDBEARING is designed by God & it's good!
2. CHILDBEARING is a blessing & children are miracles from God & Gifts to us
3. CHILDBEARING comes with pain, travail & hardship as a result of the FALL (not the way God designed it)
4. CHILDBEARING (that is, motherhood) is the greatest privilege that God could ever bestow on a woman w/ child
5. CHILDBEARING is a picture of how GOD deals with His people (Hosea 11.1-4 & 1 Thess 2)
And, here are four words of biblical counseling to women struggling with these hardships:
FOCUS - on gospel, Word, truth, God's character
DEPEND - on God's grace
INVOLVE - in church
DISCIPLESHIP - a godly woman to walk thru this with you (Titus 2)
"Practical Instructions: Obey Leaders & Remember Your Old Depraved Nature!"
Pastor Geoff preaches on the practical instructions of Titus 3:1-2 on how to live in the world/culture. To do that well, we must remember the gospel (vv.3-8). But the gospel always begins with the bad news of our real, radical, depraved, and hopeless state without Christ (v.3). That's the sermon text for today.
We are looking at what the person is like BEFORE Christ saves them. This is your old nature.
"Practical Lessons for Preserving Unity Among God's People!"
Pastor Geoff guest preaches at New Community Church in St Louis, Missouri and proclaims the faithfulness of God from the Word of God so that we may learn how to preserve unity among the people of God.
We commend the zeal of the Israelite tribes for the purity and holiness of God.
But we also learn lessons about preserving and cultivating unity. 4 practical lessons:
1. Prioritize obedience
2. Shun accusations
3. Respond patiently
4. Continue harmoniously
"Practical Steps to Take when Oppression Seizes You"
In this wonderful psalm of ascents, David wrote and pondered what things would be like if God had not been "on our side." O the terrible consequences and the amazing judgment that Israel of old would have received! But bless God that He did intervene and deliver His people!
For us as New Testament believers today, God is "for us" and we must bless His Name for we have escaped God's eternal thund'rous wrath because God did not spare His own Son but delivered Him up for us all!
In this sermon, Pastor Geoff preaches Psalm 18 and shows how David exalted God when God delivered him from Saul & from all his enemies. This is a tremendous model for us as to how we can pray, praise, and conduct ourselves!
We must worship God, praise God, and remember His faithful deliverance that He has wrought for us, His elect. May we be constantly praising Him!
"Praise God! Our Good & Great God Deserves Your Praise!"
Pastor Geoff preaches Psalm 135 and shows how God is good, great, glorious & gracious. This praise-hymn has a 3-fold structure:
1. the INVITATION to praise God
2. the REASONS to praise God
3. the RE-INVITATION/RE-AFFIRMATION to praise God
This God-centered hymn beckons us to praise our infinitely worthy & magnificently Triune and eternally unchanging God!
Worship Him for He is good!
"Praise the LORD for He Alone Is Worthy of Your Trust!"
Pastor Geoff continues the verse-by-verse exposition through the Book of Psalms and teaches on this triumphant psalm of trust. The psalmist exhorts us to NOT trust in man but to only trust in Jehovah!
Listen to the 11 towering reasons to trust only in the LORD God Almighty!
Pastor Geoff preaches Psalm 147 at the CFBC prayer meeting to prepare the flock to meet with God in prayer. This psalm focuses the hearts of the readers on God. God is mentioned or referred to more than 40 times in this 20-verse psalm! Worship is, and always must be, God-centered. It must focus on God and who He is and what He has done!
Praise God for His WORTHINESS
Praise God for His WILLINGNESS
Praise God for His WORDS
"Pray and Don't Lose Heart: A Call for Persistent & Persevering Prayer!"
Pastor Geoff preaches Luke 18:1-8 -- which is continuing the end-times discourse that our Lord gave in Luke 17:20-37 -- and this story teaches the important lesson of importunity, persistence, relentlessness of prayer.
How does a Christian respond when unjustly treated in this world? What should Christians do when we're persecuted for our faith, unjustly treated, observing the society spiral down into more godlessness? Our Lord commands us to pray at all times and not lose heart. We are to come to God repeatedly knowing that as a loving Father, he will bring about justice for His elect!
Cry to Him! Speak to Him! Pray to Him! Trust in Him!
"Pray for Righteousness and Long for God's King to Reign!"
This sermon covers Ephesians 6:18 - the final piece of the "armor of God" in 2 vitally important Truths:
1. The Supreme Importance of prayer
2. The Specific Instructions of prayer (looking phrase by phrase and word by word through Eph 6.18).
